It would not be long before the family returned and began life anew, however:

As soon as we could after the close of the war, in the fall of 1865, we came back and built a smaller house upon the same site. It was made largely of wreck timber picked up on the beach; the floor was of puncheon, hewn lank split from logs, the shingles were split out and shaved with a drawing knife on a draw horse. For some years it was the only house on the present site of New Smyrna. Ora Carpenter never came back, but settled at Osteen, some miles west. He sold his land to Edmund K. Lowd, who built there the present Ocean House, except the northern part, which was added by Captain Frank W. Sams. 44
